The Jason O'Toole INTERVIEW
Bring on the election! We're ready to govern and I've got a good aim for shooting at rats [part of article]

ENDA KENNY is apparently not averse to blasting his way out of trouble. It's difficult to envisage the Fine Gael leader as a gunwielding type but when he was still a teacher, he took it upon himself to sort out a rat infestation in his school by shooting them. 'Yes, I shot them myself,' he laughs, recounting the story when we met last Wednesday in his gargantuan office in Leinster House.
'I was secretary of the gun club at home and we used to do a lot of shooting of pheasant and duck and everything like that. And I used to hear these rats under the bloody floor and I don't like rats of any type. But I waited in the evening there one time and I took half the pellets out of the cartridge and I just waited for my "friends" to arrive and blew them into oblivion. I got three or four. 'They got their own back because you could smell the things in the floor for months afterwards.' Mr Kenny is now taking aim at the Government. Odds-on favourite to become the country's next leader, it's clear that the 58-year-old is waiting for Brian Cowen's ailing Government to implode. However, the taoiseach-in-waiting tells me he has been in this game too long to take anything for granted. After all, the political veteran has been here before: in 2007, the pundits said the general election was Fine Gael's for the taking, but Fianna Fail triumphed yet again.
